Hand-woven by Kamba women artisans, who have mastered the art of twining sisal to create highly durable, flexible baskets known globally as 'kiondos'.
Meaning
The bold, two-tone color block design represents the intersection of the sun-baked Kenyan earth (orange) and the bleached, dry grasses of the savannah (ivory).
Making
Sisal fibers are stripped, dried, and twisted into fine twine. The lower half is dyed a vibrant orange before the basket is meticulously hand-woven in a continuous, expanding circular pattern. Sturdy, rolled leather handles are then stitched securely to the rim.
Use
An incredibly durable, flexible everyday tote. Its malleable structure allows it to expand to hold market finds, beach essentials, or daily belongings, while the bright color-blocking adds a modern, graphic touch.
